4th Annual Great Tomato Taste Off!  The 4th Annual Great Tomato Taste Off will be held at the Port Orchard Farmers Market on September 15th. Tomatoes will be judged by a panel of experts on flavor, firmness/slicing quality, exterior color and shape. This year we have added new categories, cooking demos, kids' activities, live music and more! Always a lively and fun event, the day is designed to increase awareness of locally grown produce. This contest is open and FREE to everyone! If you are unable to attend but would like to enter please send your entries with a friend, family member or neighbor. You do not need to be present to win, but it really is more fun if you’re around to brag! ENTRY FORMS CATEGORIES:
JUDGING CRITERIA Flavor: 10 points possible. The perfect tomato should have a strong tomato taste, be slightly acidic, juicy and fresh tasting with a tender skin. Firmness/Slicing Quality: 5 points possible. A desirable tomato should have a dense uniform thick wall with many seed cavities, completely filled with a jelly-like mass. The firmness of the tomato should be pleasing, not too mushy and not too hard. It should be such that it will bruise if dropped, yet is not over-ripe. Exterior Color: 5 points possible. The winning tomato has a uniform color, is free of green shoulders and has no evidence of blotchy ripening. Shape: 5 points possible. Tomatoes come in different shapes and sizes, depending on the variety. Their shape should be symmetrical, but most important, the tomatoes in each entry should be uniform in size. Biggest Tomato Category: The biggest tomato will be determined by a measurement of the circumference of the widest part of the width. Heaviest Tomato Category: The tomato should be at least half ripe. Tomatoes will be weighed using the same scale to determine which is the heaviest. Funniest Looking Tomato: This category will be judged by the public! PRIZES First Prize in each category will receive 25 Market Dollars. Second Prize in each category will receive 10 Market Dollars. The Best in Show Grand Prize in the tasteing categories will receive an additional 50 Market Dollars.
